After shooting footage on location in New York I have gone onto film my performance shots with the band. The experience I had of working by myself and having to setup, direct, operate the cameras and keep the actors happy was new to me but a great experience. One of the main lessons that I learn't was that despite all of the planning there are aspects that I had to be willing to adapt and change on set. In this regard I had to learn to think fast and be resourceful. The first time I had used the lights was that day half an hour before the shoot. When I turned them on they were extremely bright and they didn't have dimmer switches. Because the room was so small the light didn't have much space to diffuse. Instead I had to be resourceful and use some orange sugar paper that I had on standby to soften the light and add warmth to it.
Before filming I had watched the Clint Eastwood film American Sniper. After watching it I spent time looking online at interviews and came across footage from behind the scenes. In this video there were shots of Eastwood talking to some of the actors include the films lead actor, Bradley Cooper. whilst watching this I was studying this to see the manor that Eastwood conducted himself when talking to the actors. In the interviews I watched the actors spoke about the confidence that Eastwood instilled in them by empowering them with one on one pep talks. While I was filming there were points that my actors felt like they couldn't fulfill my intentions. When these situations arose I would speak to them in a totally calm way and simply explain how they could and then run through the motions of what they had to do. By doing this and by acting out the moves they had to my hope was to make it seem less daunting as I was prepared to do those motions myself. By proving that I was comfortable to play the role my intention was to diminish the fear of having to act in front of me and the other actors. Any awkwardness would have come across in the footage so it was super important to avoid it occurring.
